After Foxys’ 21st, & the New Years Eve gig, we thought we were pretty good, & wanted more photos and decided to “dabble” in how far we could push this “MIMESATIONAL” project of ours. So the date was set, and after rehearsal after rehearsal, we were ready to boogie till we puked (like the NYE gig – but NO tequila) So the March gig was decided upon, and the Bowls club would have us back!
The day came around quickly. The scene was set, Freddie had been to the gym, Betty had stopped flirting, Chryssie had left choir practice, Roger had kissed the girls and made them cry want more, Foxy had left a trail of boys behind, and the captain had – well, just been the Captain, jumping around and panicking. The crew was set for the next gig!
All the crew arrived at the bowls club bright and early – as long as you consider mid afternoon early! The previous nights band slowly came in (dark sunglasses on and apparently allergic to bright lights, noise and sudden movements) and after a successful Friday gig, removed their equipment so CDU could set up. The bowls club members completed afternoon tea and seemed to have convinced Captain to become a bowling member.
“Mike Stand” and Freddie, ready to rock
“Mike Stand” Michaelson our new sound tech had the room set. After the dulcet tones of “check, one two” (well we fib here, as we are mimesational, the sound check was -limited-!) We were ready to go!
I would like, if I may, to take you on a strange journey
So a last minute dress rehearsal. The dresses were in the green (or really more beige or Ladies Bowling Club Apricot) room, and the rehearsal was on in the main room. We had Barry on stand-by, in case of amp fire, but this was not to be!
What to wear, will this clash with my belt, give me the spray!
But argument and as my Mum would call it “healthy debate” began during the run thru’s. Terry Toweling on the phone constantly to his broker, tracks having to be re-played, discussion over where to stand, who’s non working microphone to use and where to place the stands for a “better” angle, who walks on first, what bad 80′s advert would be the lead in after the break, (NOTE: it was TAB Cola) how to “Brady Bunch Dance”, how much can Freddie get away with before God or his Mother pull him up for “interference” – these and other questions nearly had a band walkout and tequila shots back at the bar.
But no, the highly professional unit got it together and aftter a quick slice of pizza and several beers (G&T for the ladies) and we were ready to rock!
Slowly and surely the room filled up to over the 170 expected. Warmed up by Terry Toweling, the band came on stage just before 9.00 p.m. and after a stirring “Waterloo” the crowd surrendered to the funky tunes mimed perfectly by our casually attired CDU crew. A great turnout with heaps of different ages at the gig!
Yes, we just got better during the second act and Freddie seemed to get away with his “manly charms” during “Turning Japanese” which avoided the vice squad raiding us, and the joke still going over the under 12 understandings! The Captain continued to scare children, and the girls entertained the “Dads” in the audience (well- any male over the age of 12!)
After some thankyous and the Captain doing a special dance (Happy Birthday Mr President) for Betty Boobalicious, and another rousing rendition of “The Swagman” ad from the 80′s, the CDU crew had done it again, tighter and better than before. We rocked Hampton!

A big thanks to the Darryl, Barry and Ken (and everyone else) at the Hampton Bowls Club. A least you are going to get 2 more bowling members out of it!
Our new technical team, lead by Mike Stand Michaelson, and Jess, a big, big thanks. The “Children of the Corn” team of Arch, Leo and Especially our funding collector, and back stage manager Indigo, we could not do this without you!
Nancy at Morrison Pictures – for the “real” green er Apricot room photos!
Also to our Chief Cleevees, Adele, Em, Chrys & Ami. Without stalkers groupies like you, we would not have this “underground” success we seem to be getting! We love you and girls, you dont have to remove the tattoos of us like the court order said!
