This will be the first review of a new event with old artists. Yes, Captain Fancypants, Foxy Faberge, Roger Roger and The “Narrator” Terry Toweling (new band member click here) all got into the Cleevee vehicle (the red mystery machine!) yesterday and went into what looked like being the concert of a life time.
Now in their younger days, the captain and Foxy have been to the “70′s band re-hashed concert” at the old entertainment centre – and were a little disappointed (KC and the sunshine band – what were they thinking) but always happy with the Countdown 1 and 2 revival concerts. Also Brian Mannix’s Countdown comedies were also highly rated.
What would happen when “old met new” with a expected 80,000 crowd in Melbourne and 60,000 at the SCG in Sydney.
Would it work? We got there nice and early and after a quick bag search by a trained monkey, we were in. We got to the very front of stage or the “mosh pit” as the younger folk called. However due to the crowd I think Moshing was going to be difficult. The other 3 people over the age of 20 up the front struck up a conversation and I forget to pass on my details to get a version of “Great Southern land” off the bloke from Queensland. He had been to the Midnight Oil warm up in Canberra – very dedicated.
All as looking good until – what Victorians had been praying for, hoping for Months, even years. No Steve Bracks had not returned to politics, nor had the Barney banana been released (yet)
Better put a raincoat on…..
Foxy and Roger
Terry Toweling in the rain
RAIN -
Pouring heavy (Sydney style) real rain opened up about 11.15 and continued on and off for the majority of the day. We all got a garbage bag – er MCG raincoat and then (already wet) tried to stay dry. Nah, we did not care we were here for the band. And for the men and women that saved Victoria and Queensland and to remember those who lost all in these disasters. The continual clips were very moving and continued to bring home the message why we were there.
We got wet. I thought it may deter some, but slowly but surely the 80,000 old thousand entered the hallowed arena and we were ready to rock.
Live crosses to Sydney on the breaks so not to miss out on any fun also.
And still Roger Roger, never misses an opportunity to “network” with the locals, come rain hail or shine!
And now, the bands and performers:
JET:
Opening act. Very good Great band to fire up the young and old crowd.
GABRIELLA CILMI:
Also very good and a great stage presence for a younger performer. Must be awesome to perform in from of a huge crowd. Also sang Led Zeppelin’s “Rock & Roll” which was great.
KINGS OF LEON:
First of the international acts. Yes Sydney had more but we rocked so much harder. Excellent – just excellent. He toasted the crowd which was a nice touch!
PAUL KELLY:
“Lookin over the bridge to the MCG! ”
What more can be said about Paul Kelly who has made the “G” infamous. He had the crowd chanting with him. (also the first artist to drop the “magic f word” when he changed the lyrics of to her door!)
Just as the rain started, that soaked thru all of our very stylish jackets!
AUGIE MARCH:
Another great band but not my cup of tea. But certainly the audiences. And one crowded hour, the “G” started to rock with the start of “singalongs”!
BLISS N ENO with PARIS WELLS:
Now I was feeling a but “old” when a group of Melb and international rappers come on so I went for my toilet break (that takes 30 mins fighting in and out of our prized front of stage position) but actually regret it as the 10 minutes I saw was really good (a few peanuts smashing into us but you get that!) The unrelenting rain has the sound system fail on them. So instead of getting cranky, they held up funny signs (we love you) to the crowd and what does a Melbourne crowd do? Riot, get angry, nope – we chant Aussie Oi Oi Oi till the music came back on. Very entertaining. Along with the girl on someone shoulders who showed the girls (some may say cans) to the foxtel home viewers. Some things never change! At least entertaining for me. The next two bands played in sunshine, the ONLY “sun” time all 12 hours we were there!
KASEY CHAMBERS & SHANE NICHOLSON w/ TROY CASSAR-DALEY
She was the surprise package to me. Highly talented and comes across as genuine (maybe she should sell real estate or cars?) But her and Shane (who are married in real life) performed wit Caseys Dad on a multitude of instruments, and Troy playing one song with them at the end. So she played both kinds of music Country and Western. Very good.
LIAM FINN
One word – WOW! More energy than could obviously be contained. I was expected a more “split Enz” approach to music from him – however he played guitars, looped the sound, then went to another instrument. And was berserk. Looked like Jack Black on a heap of speed but played some amazing rock/electronic songs. Also carries a note. This was until he got some help from some “family friends” for……. CROWDED HOUSE (with Liam finn & Mark Nick Seymour)
A personal highlight – CROWDED HOUSE!
Liam worked the drums in place of the late great Paul Hester and also added Hunters Mark Seymour Brother Nick Seymour (thanks Lisa from NZ for picking up my error) on bass. But the few Crowded House numbers played was worth coming for.
JACK JOHNSON:
He had come over from Hawaii and was very moved by the fact he was playing solo and acoustically in front of 80,000. Had the crowd in his hands however. Humble and fantastic.
WOLFMOTHER:
And the rain returned and the bogans beer consumption levels had kicked in behind us. But Wolfmother, like Jet played BOTH venues and had come from Sydney to Melbourne to rock the ground. And this they did and did not disappoint. It was now dark and wet and becoming cold, but that did not deter the pumping crowd.
MINUTES SILENCE: As per the live crosses, the stage darkened and we crossed to Sydney to see Toni Collette talk in the “Princes” from England. I think it was live as Harry coughed in the middle of the speech. Then a minutes silence with haunting pictures from the two disasters. It is amazing to see 80,000 people quiet from a roar to nothing.
Well, 79, 980 as one peanut called out “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie” with the majority of the crowd calling out “shut up!” So with all eyes glued to the massive screens, the lights come back on stage and we are presented with……
KYLIE MINOGUE
On the Melbourne Stage! How awesome would it be to look out onto the crowd above. (Not all can be like Kylie and cleavagedownudner!) Glamorous and articulate as ever, she led us into a chorus of “I still call Australia home”. As she put it , “without a band, without feathers!” Amazing: Excellent!
HUNTERS & COLLECTORS
They boys are back. And the place really rocked out. My favourite as a huge Hunters fan. They played all the greats and more. An amusing moment when the host of the night (obviously a huge Hunters fan also) called out to the audience for one more song, after the roadies had come out and had began dismantling the set. Another “magic F word” dropped by the chief roadie as he looked at his crew already moving stuff out. Evil thoughts to the peanut who threw the bottle of water on stage.
SPLIT ENZ Another group back for the “one off”!
Just amazing and talented as ever “those Finn brothers” and the percussionist is a Hampton local Well done! Just loved them! The Enz were all dressed in white with white staging. “I see red” was interrupted by Red Symons who tapped Tim on the shoulder during the number. I laughed!
Even had a “beached as bro” wool theme on the back drop!
MIDNIGHT OIL
When Mark Seymour came on he said the following: *There have been a lot of rumours about tonight, but I want to see what the “minster for the Environment is wearing” * Well the Honourable Mr Garrett come on in read pants and a standard shirt, but his antics, voice and amazing stage presence was perfect. All the songs, what a band. Loved them then, love them now. Made me feel a little old as I explained to Roger Roger and the narrator (now known as Terry Towelling) that I went to the first concert of the Oils at the then Entertainment Centre in the 1980′s.
THE SYDNEY LIVE CROSSES.
Some great songs and acts, but they can be reviewed by those there. I want to say to Sydney, when it rained there towards the end of the concert, 80,000 Melbournians went “suffer too”!
Coldplay and John Farnham singing you’re the voice was brilliant and got the entire Melbourne crowd singing it while watching the screens, and Great Southern Land was also fantastic.

And another review HERE from the music site LAST.FM (thanks Richaod)
So I ask you all, where else in the WORLD can you get 20 local and overseas acts, reform several band, get a politician to lead a heavy rock band and hold it over two venues.
ONLY AUSTRALIA!
All of the band send their condolences and prayers to all who have lost loved ones, animals or property in the biggest natural disaster and loss of life in Australian history. We will not forget and thank the CFA, Police, St John and Ambulance Victoria for the tireless fight to save lives.Remember how lucky we all are!

Hi Captain! Just wanted to say how much I
) loved reading your review of the concert. Couldn’t go ourselves but listened to it all day on the wireless! Certianly a once in a lifetime experience.
Sorry we won’t be able to come to the gig on Saturday, we have a 14 year old that needs to be ferried to social event after social event on that night. Best wishes for a successful gig – we hope to get to the next one!

Nice review of the concert. I wish I could of been there.
Note: Mark Seymour is NOT in Crowded House it is his brother Nick Seymour who plays Bass. And it was only half of Crowded House Mark Hart(keyboard/guitar) and Matt Sherrod (the Drum since 2007) wasn’t in the country. They were still awesome.
Thanks Lisa, Foxy Faberge picked this up (definitely my bad!) and I have been to lazy or preoccupied to correct it.
But good to know people are reading it! Will correct in the next few days.
Some Crowded House Fan I am !
Cheers
Captain fancypants
