MAYDAY GIG – WE SO ROCK! 01-MAY-2010 Hampton Bowls Club

Thanks to Nancy for her “happy snaps” Photography from Morrison Photography CLICK HERE

The scene was set:
-
Freddy had finished at the “Atlas” gym and had finished turning Japanese for the Month;
-
Captain was in the market for a panel van STILL, but will settle for a Mazda Bongo or a Ford Escort van (Like the RACV had);
-
Betty was practising for the under 15 Chiko Roll Queen of Toorak Rd;
-
Roger was still trying to see if he could get out of his 43rd marriage proposal;
-
Foxy was still giggling and buying more Decore hair coloring from Edward Beale;
-
And Terry Towelling, along with Jumping Jack and Mike Stand Michaelson had prepared the bail money for the band post gig!
IT was time for
the “MAYDAY” gig.

The Mimesational 5, again supported by Lady Go-Go were transported into 1986 (if you exclude the hired LED lights, which are a modern invention) and take over the Hampton Bowls Club. We rehearsed and rehearsed, and tired our poor mime voices out!
Practice makes perfect!
It was not without its trials and tribulations:
-
The band “experimented” with On line ticketing. It seemed to work!
-
A broken (and very smelly) smoke machine, but Mike Stand Michaelson to the rescue!;
-
Lots of verbal yes, but slow initial sales;
-
Then in the last 24 hours before the gig, HEAPS of tickets, for a sell-out!
-
The band starting time, versus the Bowling Club clash with the “Winter Bowls Comp”, & PRESENTATION finishing 30 minutes before the gig start;
-
Avoiding “Harry High Pants” – in joke with the band
-
LED lighting, sub hiring, real equipment…. but the set up continued!
The Marshall amps – We can now tun up to 11
The Friday Bump In was creatively fitted in around a surprise wake after a funeral of a Hampton local, and of course the Friday Bowlers Happy Hour, made for a very creative Friday set-up!
However we got a quick rehearsal in on Friday, (with support from the main bar cheering on and giving pointers!!) and got to test out these “new fancy fangled lights!”
Wow, what lights!
But with a minimum of fuss and nonsense, and a quick visit to CDU HQ by no other than our own “Chryssie DeVinyl” who did our hair,
WE WERE READY!
Which ROCK GOD to choose? Come back to the band Chryssie De Vinyl!
Then we “red rattled” to the club, set up our magnificent set and were ready to rock Saturday night!
A bit of banter back stage!
Terry Towelling began with his not quite famous Trivia quiz, with hard questions like:
“Can you name the Cleavagedownunder band members?”
Sadly, it took a few minutes for that one to be answered!
But in “2001 Space Odyssey” tradition, the band entered to a thunderous applause and began to rock the mimesational house!
New numbers like “Time Warp” had Terry Towelling even in fish nets, and Foxy’s version of “So What”, while not strictly 80s, got the crowd moving.
The usual crowd favs, “Turning Japanese”, and “Long Way to the Top”, Even the “Swagman Restaurant” theme all got the crowd moving!
so nearly 200 “punters” rocked and rolled and let me assure you from the band perspective, the best gig to date was performed to a great responsive audience.
