After being absorbed as one of the “Naughty Glam Tarts” at the recent Melody Lords Concerts SEE REVIEW HERE , We were taken back to the 70s with the “vibe” of the band and the effects of the 70′s and 80′s had on us for the next few weeks.

Throbbing

Stevie Blissbomb
(Sorry, could not help myself – LOVE the Melody lords!)
Yes, even in the lead up to Christmas, We will look back at what made the 70′s & 80′s with community service announcement ads on the old Rank Arena. Some of these were released on 45, and not a hard plastic one, one of those 45′s that came in a magazine!

And now on with the CSA’s!
Lets start with this gem, limited footage from YOU Tube as only the still photo, but rest assured I have the 45 of this,
CARE FOR KIDS – Kids
See I actually own this single! Released for “The year of the Child” In 1979 or Grade 6 for the Captain.

I got the single!
SAVE OUR PETROL (Energy reduction campaign from 1979)
Yes, at least a dozen ways to save our petrol! With the great Larry Pickering dabbling into cartooning with this ad campaign! For those born post 1989- Pickering was famous for his “nude” cartoons that appeared in the paper. Nudes were banned, except if it was a Pickering.
Still around and cartooning at http://www.larrypickering.net/
DO THE RIGHT THING! (Anti Litter campaign)
Yes, instead of the Singapore example of monstrous punishments, the 70′s & 8o’s Aussie Governments when with a jingle and a cheesy campaign. Oh, and lots of Aussie flags & “Tidy Towns” awards! It failed and we now have monstrous fines!
CHRISTIAN TELEVISION ASSOCIATION
This is NOT the ad I wanted! I wanted the absurd one about “we decided to wrap up a Church” but this “One Man Band” (seriously, that is his group(s) name!) ad from the early 80′s! But I did like the devil and Angel one where the Angel snots the devil. Cant find that one either!
IM AN AUSSIE: Salvatore Smith
Hard to beat for cheesiness. This has been the discussion between a number of us for a number of years on just how damn average it is! Written by Pete Best (of the Pete Best Beatles – one of my all time Fav bands) but sung by a Radio DJ from NSW. Some interesting footage from the 70′s & 80′s. Love the fact it is all about love your neighbor, political correct etc, BUT he does say “Yankee” and “Pom”, which I think in this day and age would be sackable/fineables/sueable in this age of snivel libertarian! However the message is still true (no matter how craptactular the song is) and shows Aussie’s the way we were before political correctness took over. And sadly, this song gets into your head and will annoy you for days on end!
LIFE BE IN IT!
What can I say about Norm. I wanted the “Davo, Davo’s taking the kids out flying kites -beawdy Newk” cartoon (As in my school production I was one of Davo’s kids for grade 4 concert- but that’s another story) ut the Life be in it still rings true today. Even if the stars of then are all now sports commentators.
SLIP SLOP SLAP (Anti Cancer Council with Sid the Seagull!)
First of the decent health promotions that with simple messages save us from Skin Cancer and make us use sun screen. Love his Sexy sensational stupendous impediment! Probably why you cant see him today (back to political correctness)
AIDS “GRIM REAPER” Campaign
What a fantastic ad. If it did nothing else it scared the you know what out of us! The man who was the voice of the “reaper” lives locally and he still terrifies me! But remember Australia had one of the lowest HIV rates until recently! Was it due to clever advertising?
TAC (Transport Accident Commission)
While I won’t post more about TAC and the drink driving reductions, we (as in Aussies with community campaigns) have done some clever advertising (but as you see above, some average ones!) but Victoria has the or one of the lowest Road Tolls per capita that anywhere in the world!
OK, JUST ONE TAC AD. (Maybe 2) This one is NOT for the squirmish and probably NSF children! This summarises the last 20 years of campaigning, which got our road toll from 800 to under 300.
Especially for our overseas visitors, this is a fantastic series. My mate Paul (And Brendan) were the Ambo’s in this very first (maybe second) one. “Give me back my boy” We still miss you Paul (Paul died overseas while working as an ambo in 2006) We still miss yer mate.
Note that TAC still uses real coppers, ambos, SES & hospital staff for the ad’s. (Probably cheaper than real actors!)
So there you have it. Some old memories! Some fantastic, and some craptactular. Will try and go for a Aussie Christmas theme, or just re-hash last years Xmas one!

Next Weeks review coming!
