Welcome Cleevees to this very special Christmas edition from the band that would bring you the hits in

“Mimeorama”

There is a new poll here on the site: Who is the most popular band member. This is to work out who’s mum and dad are logging on the most. PLEASE vote so we can continue some more positive “in fighting” amongst members! ——->

And thanks to those who tried in the 2008 competition. Winners are the Cleevee Stalkers of Frankganistan (or Stabston dependent on beliefs) and Jenny Jenny of Sandringham the badge winners. Carts of Brighton due to his pathetic attempt will also receive a “Cleavagedownunder” badge to proudly display.

WE ARE Still running the competition for a “Female ballad” for our girls, Betty & Foxy to sing.  See “Competitions” at the top of the site!

As the “big day” gets nearer, I will take you on a bit of an Aussie Christmas ride.

Aussie Christmas, What does it mean to us. Usually more holidays, lots of food and grog, maybe an afternoon nap. Pretty much same world wide, but here in Melbourne it can be 40 degrees, or rain and hail. (no snow for us)

So what do we remember?

(Before reading on, this is about the lyrics of the song, not the tragic event – I did buy the single!  We were criticised on another site re the reference – PLEASE this is about the song, not the event)

ON Christmas Eve of 74, a warning sounded out,

On all the broadcast stations, a great storm was near about.

Yes, long before Live Aid, USA for Africa, and even “Artists against Apartheid” there was an Aussie “fund raising tragedy song”.

On Christmas Day, 1974, We all read in horror that Cyclone Tracy had hit Darwin. Warning: Annoying siren at start of this clip!)

There is now two song reference’s on Youtube to “Santa never made it into Darwin”. Click here and be prepared to be “struck by the tragedy” that was Bill & Boyd. OH Yeah, Darwin too!

With other classic song lines like

“Many boats blew out to sea,

very few returned”

Yes, “The mums and dads all prayed the mighty storm would turn away” (And Bill & Boyd would return to New Zealand!)

Yet “Bill & Boyd’s fund raising tragedy hit of 1974 (well released 1975 after the Cyclone) was exactly that (but I did buy it) but the next single, “The Easter Bunny never got into Jonestown” failed to chart. They faded like a wild Dingo in the Chamberlain Child minding centre of Cleavagedownunder rock and roll, but we need to continue….

REMEMBER – THIS IS MAKING LIGHT OF THE SONG: NOT THE TRAGEDY OF DARWIN IN 1974!

What else in Aussie Christmas history; Let me think

ah Yes: GROG!

Until the start of the 90’s drinking used to be matched with driving, especially during the festive season, which of course added to many a fatal accident around this time. While it is better now, the “boys in blue” still nab a ton of people who are “bloody idiots” during the festive party season. (See the Police AUST wide “Op Unite” during December to see the continued push for a safer Xmas)

In he early 1980’s Keith McGowan , a prominent 3MP Melbourne DJ made another hartwarming plea for a “Little boys Christmas prayer” (WAS Here on Youtube – NOW removed) wanting us to all be safe. (And he signed my 3MP cap in 1979 at Kids World – see I am a stalker) Keith is still going on 3AW (Click here for link)

Then in an attempt to combat the ever increasning road toll, in the 1990s onwards the Victorian Government’ insurer, the Transport Accident Commission started these graphie and confronting ad’s for Christmas campaign’s.

I will post this one as a tribute to Paul the Ambulance Paramedic in the Ad. He passed away suddenly in 2006. Paul spent a memorable Christmas with the Captain, Freddie and our roadie Rhino making parody ads of the TAC (lost in time due to a taping mix up) but attended with us, a Church service in the late 80s with Freddie and the Captain – I don’t think we could have laughed more if we tried (Why is the priest in a dress Freddie?) I think we will have issues in getting into heaven come judgment day for that night!

“Thanks Paul thinking of you mate!”

And as for carols:

This section especially for our overseas Cleevees

(and as pointed out only 1 real Canadian fan – WE WANT MORE O/S FANS!)

6 white boomers by Rolf harris. I used to think he was singing about the cleavage of the band, but I was mistaken

And of course “Jingle Bells” the Aussie version. A great clip here

So from the CDU band and crew, as we continue to develop, rehearse and get ready for our 2010 gigs for your pleasure (well ours really – wait for the rehearsal out-takes!) and again, for info use the comments form at the bottom if you want to  be e-mailed about any upcoming gigs.

Keep in touch, if not see you at gigs next year (Poss Feb or March 2010)……….. And stay safe over Christmas We want you at our 2010 gig’s!

6 white boomers……………

P.S.  here is the bands Xmas list!

The Wish list for the band for this Xmas is as follows:

  • The Captain wants dozen frozen “Sunny Boys”& some VFL football cards,

  • Foxy is begging for a pair of “Faberge” jeans & “Bobbles” for her hair.

  • Freddie now wants  CD version best of Village People (did not know there was a best of) as he wore out his LP,

  • Betty’s up for a new computer -  a Commodore 64 and a bottle of 4711 from Freddie, (how romantic) and

  • Chryssie if we can find her. wants a bottle of Brandivino that she can sneak into our gig for “pre nerve medication” purposes (CHILDREN THIS IS BAD NEVER COPY US!) mainly as Pete Viscious is hanging around again and

  • Roger is getting a Cabbage Patch Doll, but due to a delivery muck up, will not be available till March or April.

  • Terry Towelling is after frequent flyer card for the bail money he is seeming to be forking out too regularly!

  • Mike Stand Michaelson is shopping for crutches for Miss Mike Stand!

  • Lady Go Go, now has a copy of “Flashdance” and rehearsing!

  • Pete might get a “visit” from our Chryssie, and

  • Roadies Rhino-Tripod and Grip Boy, of course got gaffa tape.
